It's hard to beat a town where life size plastic cows decorated in Swiss themes rome around and wood braced buildings that remind you of Zurich are at every turn. New Glarus is such a town and has many great places to meet up with friends, enjoy fondue and take a much needed break. The New Glarus Hotel has been a staple in our lives for half a decade. We have been here for a wonderful New Years Eve celebration, 4th of July and much more. The food and ambiance remind you of a well loved Swiss or German dinner club. Solidly prepared foods combined with some great reislings and local beers. The spatzl, sauerbraten and other wonderful dishes will make you wish you had worn your "stretchy pants".

I'd rate this a 3 1/2 star restaurant. It's kind of a touristy place where the waitresses dress up in Swiss garb, menu is heavily Swiss influenced, even printed in a colonial font. This translates to tourist prices. Every time we've dined here they were not busy. This is usually during lunch time rush where all the other restaurants are packed or have a wait, so we've always been able to sit in the four season room facing the streets downtown. It's a great vantage to people watch. We've gotten their spetzel, schnitzel, roesti, and oddly enough, the fried fish sandwich and everything was good. But this is as far as it goes, nothing is really a standout but there are no hard fails either. The bread basket is very good. They have lots of New Glarus beer on tap and do a buffet brunch on weekends. The atmosphere crates a nice ambiance so overall, it's a place worth checking out if you have no other dining options.

Wow! Saturday night they have a bufet with prime beef, Chicken, and all the Swiss side dishes. The bufet was full of fresh items that were all fantastic. The salad bar was well managed and kept full and fresh..... the best part it was full of Wisconsin Cheese! The resturaunt also has a full bar! In fact two bars...... Next time your in New Glarus stop buy for a cilinary Swiss treat! Dave Gombosi

Husband and I had a blast here! We were there on a Saturday (live music ever Fri & Sat) and ordered the cheese pie (it had a very Swiss name that I cannot remember) and the husband had the buffet that offered 5 meats and 5 sides. Both meals included the salad bar that also boasted 5 cheeses (we are in Green Co, Wi after all). My meal also offered Swiss onion soup. Dispite the wallpaper paste appearance, the soup was very tastey and again included a double dose of Swiss cheese. The band was a lot of fun and it was quite entertaining to watch the 30 or more septiginarian Swiss dance on the dancefloor. The band played Polkas and walzes mostly. The wine list was small, but well-represented. This restaurant also offers local beers from New Glarus brewery.

The New Glarus Hotel is one of the best restaurants in the area for all around Swiss food. The atmosphere in nice and the service has always been good. Mostly I go for the Saturday night Buffet. I will drive almost an hour on a Saturday night just for their Buffet. They have an above average buffet. The price is maybe slightly higher than you can get some places, but the food has always been hot and very good. I am a fan of their Kalbeuwurst that they offer on their buffet. A big fan. A Really BIG fan. Kalbeuwurst is a mild veal sausage made in a milk gravy. If you have never tried it, the New Glarus Hotel Saturday night buffet is a great time to give it a try. Kalbeuwurst is not a hard dish to make, just time consuming. I will make it at home if I have the time. Most of the time in a restaurant, if it is on the menu, it is below average. It is not the restaurant's fault, the dish is hard to serve on demand and get a great Kalbeuwurst dinner. I have been disappointed when I have ordered it in a restaurant. I have been disappointed at the New Glarus Hotel when ordering off the menu. When the New Glarus Hotel has Kalbeuwurst on their buffet, they do it right. It is as close to home made I have found in any restaurant. It is because they are making larger amounts instead of just one dinner. And when I go there, all I eat is large amounts of Kalbeuwurst, mashed potatoes, and a token amount of salad bar. The rest of their Saturday night buffet is good and fresh. The Swiss cheese is above average and their cheese spread is great. They do a very good job. In the summer, request the balcony and if you are lucky enough to get a table, you will be treated to a very nice overlook of downtown New Glarus. If you are going on Saturday night, call ahead to make sure the buffet is being offered. Sometimes if they have a large group or a wedding, they will not offer the buffet.

Went there for lunch today (Saturday), what a treat! I had wiener schnitzel with a fried egg, anchovies and capers on top and it was superb. It came with Brussels sprouts and spaetzle, yum yum!. My companion had the tenderloin sandwich and he said it was a great cut of meat. $17 for each entree is a bit pricey for lunch but the food is authentic Swiss and delicious. Oh, and did I mention the peanut butter chocolate cake made in-house? Outstanding, and a good price at only $3.50 for a large piece. The Riesling from Botham Winery was very good too, not too sweet, and it went well with the schnitz.

Had Sunday brunch at the New Glarus Hotel on a recent WI road trip after a local had recommended it being a great place to try some authentic Swiss dishes. I'm ashamed to say that I cannot remember the last time I ate so much food it was fantastic! As far as I'm concerned the brunch buffet was reasonably priced for the quality and selection of foods offered (only $17.95 per person). There are over 20 items offered and besides the swiss specialties, it also includes basic brunch items such as eggs, sausage, pancakes and also the salad bar and sweet table. My favorite items which were most memerable were the Roesti which was a delicious potato pancake with melting swiss cheese in the middle and then the Geschnetzlets which were tender pieces of meat in a a rich herby cream sauce which I naturally paired with some spaetzle talk about holy comfort food even if it was nearly 90 degrees outside! I sampled it all. The Wienerschnitzel, Bratwurst with sauerkraut and Kalberwurst. I barely had room for any of the sweets but I managed to try the apple cake, a rum ball and berry cheesecake which are all offered in small bite sized portions. I would love to go back sometime to see some live entertainment or give the swiss fondue a try because I noticed lots of people ordereing that as well.

food - the sauerkraut was top notch, the bratwurst and the meat balls as well. The raclette was OK (they don't bother bringing the cheese melter to the table, no charcuterie, so a bit on the cheap and lazy side, for $13 they could have done a bit more than 2 potatoes with melted cheese over them), the cheese quiche was good but not very subtle. Other items in the buffet were OK but nothing special service - a bit pushy for the buffet and then stop and go. Seemed like there were tons of different types of staff but only one would help atmosphere - as kitch as you were looking for by going to eat swiss in a wisconsin town known as little switzerland value - On the expensive side, even for lunch none of the entrees are less than 12-15 dollars. The sunday brunch is $20 which is not bad since it includes appetizer items, mains and a nice selection of deserts.

I writing this after attending Polka Fest and finishing it off on Sunday at the Hotel. We were greeted by a very rude bartender and one that should dress proper. She's no teenager and everyone else wears Swiss, which for the town, they should dress Swiss. Its so good to have Steph back. It seems like she's the only one that knows whats going on and has the personality. We are regulars on the weekends and enjoy the music. Thanks

I happened upon the town of New Glarus over 30 years ago while on a self-contained bicycle tour from Chicago through Wisconsin and Minnesota. It was love at first sight, given that my ancestors came from Switzerland and Germany. After packing up my tent and cycling down the hill from the state park into town I saw the New Glarus Hotel, built by the Swiss immigrants in 1853, perched on the side of the hill and walked in for a hearty breakfast. Back in those days the red geranium lined balcony was opened to the fresh air and sunshine so there I sat enjoying a wonderful breakfast on the terrace overlooking the quaint town. It is a memory still vivid in my mind after all these years. That being said, I usually make an annual trip up to New Glarus during the summer or fall to enjoy the cycling on the great roads or bike trails in the area. And what would a trip to New Glarus be without stopping for some beer at the brewery; some cheese, bread and landjaeger at the shops; and a hearty Swiss meal at the restaurants. My experiences at the New Glarus Hotel through the years have been mixed although for the most part they have been positive. The food has always been well-prepared and the portions are good. The fondue is very good. I would recommend avoiding the buffet or salad bar. It's very expensive and depending on when you eat, the meats and sides might be sitting for a long time. The service is usually good but it can feel rushed at times and I don't like to feel like I'm being pushed out to turn a table. The hotel caters to the bus loads of senior citizen tourists that amble through town. Also, the restaurant seems to be a focal point of any local festivity in the area so the locals are usually having some kind of big party in the main room, be it wedding or birthday which makes for a celebratory atmosphere with the live bands and dancing. Overall I feel that the prices are high for the food but the ambiance is cozy, fun and worth a visit.

My wife and I took a weekend trip up here and wanted to try some authentic Swiss dishes. The New Glarus hotel has a very authentic look to it, with the waitresses dressed appropriately with this theme. We were seated on the balcony with a nice view of the downtown area. I ordered the Wienerschnitzel with Roesti, and found it to be delicious. The breading on the tenderloin was seasoned just right and the potatoes truly complimented dish. The reason I am giving this place 3 stars has to do with their pricing and cleanliness of the place. For the beverages, Wienerschnitzel with Roesti, a kids meal and a salad bar, our bill was over $50. Also, while seated on the balcony, we were constantly swatting away flies while trying to enjoy the delicious food. While the food was delicious, it's hard to overlook the expensive bill. I recommend trying this place out at least once, but the town has several other options for good food.

A trip to New Glarus isn't complete without cheese curds, or at least that's what I'm told. I'm not from Wisconsin, but having lived with a girl and dated a girl (separate girls) who both hail from the Cheesehead State, I knew that my first adventure into the great farmland would require this. Our first stop upon arrival was the New Glarus hotel, mostly because Adam assured me that we'd find what we were looking for there. Is it possible somewhere else in town has a good Swiss/Wisconsin-based menu? Sure, I guess it is. But after a meal served by a woman in traditional Swiss dress, featuring enough grease, fried food, cheese and weiner schnitzel to give a man a coronary, I decided I loved Wisconsin and its food. Even when our credit card wouldn't go through, they still were apologetic, nice and no one behind us in line complained all that much. Must not have been New Yorkers.

Review for the bar only: Friends and I recently bounced into the sunken U-shaped bar at New Glarus Hotel for a tipple after spending a couple hours at New Glarus Brewery up on the hill. The only reason we chose this place is that it was closest to the first available parking space. We were obviously the first customers of the late afternoon/early evening as the Swiss/German barkeep was still setting up her bar for the evening. We inquired about the 'styles' of beer on draft at which she appeared confused and simply read aloud the names of the selections. We shared an awkward laugh and each ordered a beer. One of my compatriots soon began testing his painfully limited German on the bartender whose patience was quickly wearing thin (whether genuine or rehearsed, I'll never know). He played the 'ugly American' role to a tee, shouting when she at first didn't understand the horribly mispronounced words spewing forth. She played along, though, and was a very good sport keeping us entertained with her Old World 'I take zero shit from anybody'-style wit. Soon some regulars from suburban Milwaukee arrived and joined us all in some lively conversation. We only stayed for one beer before relieving the poor barmatron, but probably could have spent the entire evening (at least until we got kicked out). Proscht!

I have mixed thoughts on the New Glarus Hotel. We went on a Saturday at 5:30 and the place was pretty empty, though started filling in while we ate. We ate the fondue appetizer, which is a delicious cheese mixture with a hints of something almost like campaign. You definitely need to get it if you eat here. We've learned over the years, that with two people and a fondue appetizer, the rest of the entrees are much too large. So we asked our waitress to split the sauerbraten and I was happy that they spit it and brought it out on two separate plates. We were right, one appetizer and one entree is fine for two people. Especially considering the amount of delicious cheese, butter and oil they use. I was especially happy with the sauerbraten. The meat was tender and pleasantly sour. It was accompanied by a purple sauerkraut - crisp, yet tangy and its flavor cut through the gravy. The spatzli (Swiss-style noodles) though, just tasted like pan-fried, buttery noodles and not worth the calories. The service was alright, but they seemed pretty busy even though the place wasn't filled. Overall, I'll probably be back when I get a fondue craving or when friends come from out of town and are looking for some hearty Swiss-style food.

Thank you for your hospitality New Glarus Hotel! The service was immediate, the portions were massive. My only complaint would have to be the prices; for New Glarus, Wis. the entree prices were quite high.

Came for the Easter buffet. Most everything was excellent and the service was outstanding. Would definitely consider coming here again. Note: very heavy food but everything was available in tiny potions so you could still try most things.

I would give this place 0 stars if I could. My husband had the Roesti (looks and tastes like a giant potato pancake that was stored in the freezer until it was removed, fried, and set on the plate) and steak (the meat was a terrible quality). Because the restaurant looked and smelled dank, I stuck with something lighter- the broiled haddock. Whatever came out had absolutely no flavor, must have also only recently been de-thawed, and was barely edible. I barely made a dent (that's saying a lot since I was super hungry going into lunch). The "fish" came with greened beans (salted beyond belief, pathetically wilted and clearly from a can) and a baked potato (this was fine, hard to mess up, but I wasn't 100% sure the sour cream it came with hadn't expired, yuck). My husband asked for steak sauce to make a last ditch effort to give his steak flavor; it was never brought to us. We've traveled all over Europe and know authentic Swiss food. This wasn't it. I thought Toffler's was a decent bet, and for more variety and quality, make the 30 minute trip to Madison.

One of the lamest, most annoying restaurant experiences I've ever had. Like, straight out a National Lampoon movie lame. Look, I know I'm just another tourist coming to eat at one of about five restaurants in town after visiting the brewery, but there's still consequences for treating me and my friends like we're some walking sacks of cash that need to be shaken loose. So let's start with the service then. The minute I stepped in I swear I saw dollar signs light up in each of the servers' eyes. Before I had a minute to so much as peek at the menu I was being uncomfortably scuttled in to a seat and getting a sales pitch for the most expensive specials. The waitress we were then assigned stepped up the annoying factor by about 10, constantly pestering us to buy more food when we clearly weren't interested. She aggressively went to great lengths to point out and try to take orders without our consent for the most expensive things on the menu, constantly uttering things like "It's pretty good so why don't I just put that in for you right now to get started?" Even when we called her out on it, she just wouldn't take no for an answer. The plates are some of the most overpriced garbage I have ever had the misfortune of spending my money on. The "spaetzle" was clearly undercooked prepackaged elbow macaroni doused in oil. The cuts of meat were pressed, microwaved, and 30 bucks a plate. Vegetables were soggy and rotting. I have made better meals than this using old leftovers and ketchup as a high school latchkey kid, because at least then I didn't have to worry about the food being hazardous to my health. The salad bar was downright offensive. Flies buzzing around, food that had been sitting out for hours, disgusting old bottom-tier cheese, and absolutely nothing of merit in the entire mix. Not to mention the fact that I was the only one in the restaurant that wasn't hooked up to an oxygen tank. Fuck you New Glarus. You want real food? Go to Madison. Go to the bar down the street because it's impossible to fuck up fried food. Stay away from this horrifying, disrespectful, tourist-leeching excuse for a restaurant.
